Example Towers

Early Game Towers that are cheap but fairly weak, these towers are used to kick off the game and defend against lesser enemies while you save up for better towers. The usefulness of these towers falls off quickly. Scout, Sniper, Paintballer, Soldier, Archer
Mid Game Mid Game is defined as in between waves 15 and 30. Towers that specialize in mid-game have

upgrade prices and attack stats in between those of late-game towers and early-game towers. Many mid-game towers can be placed in early-game after a few waves or some farming, but they will retain their value throughout the majority of the match. Mid-game towers usually have the best upgrade cost-efficiency out of all the towers in the game. They are easy to take to max level or spam in large quantities. When using most mid-game towers, you can relax a bit and farm for late-game towers once you get a particular tower to a certain level.

Crook Boss, Minigunner, Militant, G-Scout, G-Soldier, Hunter, Trapper, Elf Camp
Late Game Late Game towers are expensive, but they hit like a frieght train. Late Game is usually defined as after wave 30 on Molten and Fallen. Ranger, Pursuit, Turret, Accelerator, G-Minigunner, Gatling Gun
Support Support towers do barely any damage (if the tower deals damage at all), but they support other towers in your army. Most support towers directly boost an offensive tower's stats, but some may improve the economy or slow down enemies so they remain in your towers' range for longer. Farm, Commander, DJ, Medic, Freezer, Cryomancer
Hybrid A mix between offense and support, hybrid towers deal decent enough damage to actually contribute directly to tearing down enemies, but they have a unique perk that helps your army indirectly. Hybrid towers have lower DPS than full DPS towers. Cowboy, Frost Blaster, Toxic Gunner, Sledger, G-Cowboy, Warden, Jester, Mercenary Base
Crowd Control These towers specialize in dealing with hordes of weak enemies, but have sub-par DPS for their cost. Crowd control towers will generally struggle against high-health bosses. Pyromancer, Demoman, Rocketeer, Mortar, Executioner, Shotgunner, Ace Pilot, G-Pyromancer, Electroshocker, Gladiator
Outclassed Mostly useless because there is another tower with a similiar or lower price that outperforms it. Commando, Slasher
All Round Good in all stages of the game, and helpful against both bosses and hordes. These towers can be placed in early-game and have solid cost-efficiency, but they don't exactly stand out in one particular area. Most of the towers mentioned in this category are mostly used as sub-DPS. They contribute heavily during mid and late-game, but can't be used as your prime source of firepower due to some random weakness. Military Base, Swarmer, G-Crook Boss, Engineer, Brawler
