Rift Walker

The Cube should have remained shattered.
It's[sic] existence alone is a threat to us all.

―Rift Walker in the second Outpost 16 cutscene.

Description

The Rift Walker was a being that had existed since the Old World, being affiliated with Two X. Despite being addressed as an extremely powerful individual,[2] it is unknown whether the Rift Walker fought as a warrior on Two X's side during the war against Lord Exo.

After the war, the Rift Walker would help create the different realms in the Meta with Two X, being put in charge of the monumental duty to watch over and maintain their security, lest it is all undone and reality falls into the Nil Zone.[2] If a being or group of beings were to pose a threat to the security of the Meta, it would be up to the Rift Walker to take care of them, his method of choice usually being banishment to the Outer Nil Zone.

Personality

The Rift Walker, from what can be gathered from character testimonies and in-game content, is an extremely serious individual, fanatically dedicated to preserving the balance of the Meta, to the point where he had banished T.D.S. agents, the protagonists of the game, to the Outer Nil Zone.

This is not to say that the Rift Walker is blinded by his duties, or harbors secret malice. The Rift Walker's fears and duties are justified, given how dangerous of a threat Lord Exo posed not only in the Old World, but even within the God Cube. To banish someone involved in the merging of God Cube fragments, regardless if they did not have the intention of freeing Lord Exo, would have been something that he could not afford to think twice about.

He has been described by the Narrator to be "a total bore" because he is vehemently against chaos.[3]

Abilities & Characteristics

Abilities
Portal Manipulation: The Rift Walker has been shown to create portals for both transportative and offensive purposes. Portals opened by the Rift Walker can be interdimensional or intradimensional, creating a gateway between realms or two locations within the same realm.

Temporal Manipulation: The Rift Walker is capable of altering time and rewriting history, with the most notable use of this ability being altering history to remove Lunar Overture Event's third act from reality.[4] This has been stated to only be an ability he is capable of using in his and Two X's realms, likely the realms that are part of the Meta, but are unable to use it in other realms like the Nil Zone.[5] Altering time and history also has the side effect of erasing the memories of those who were there to experience it.[6]
Merging of God Cube Fragments: The Rift Walker can effortlessly merge God Cube fragments together without the need for technology.

Other
Connection to The Meta: Since the Rift Walker is one of the primary forces sustaining the balance of the Meta, if he were to die, all of the realms would collapse, and existence would fall into the Nil Zone.
"The realms will collapse, if I die."
The Rift Walker's Staff: The staff that the Rift Walker wields helps him to walk, but more importantly, it has been shown as the device he uses to facilitate his portal creation.

Story

Old World

The Rift Walker is created or born in the Old World. He pledges his allegiance to Two X, and plays an unknown role in the battle against Lord Exo. At a certain point, presumably after the battle, he appoints the Null Guardian to patrol the Outer Nil Zone.[7]

Lunar Overture

The Rift Walker intervenes during the third act of the Lunar Overture Event by rewriting history, removing it from the timeline.[8] In doing so, he ends up sending some of the actors into other places, like different areas of the Solar Theatres[9] or banished them to the Nil Zone.[10]

Anyone who was part of the show experienced the rewrite as a glitch[11] that rewound time. They would initially have the memories of the event, but with time most of the participants eventually had them fade away.[12]

Null & Void

Being ordered by Two X to protect the Meta, the Rift Walker travels to Outpost 16, where he merges and takes the God Cube pieces into his possession, banishing a number of T.D.S. agents to the Outer Nil Zone in the process.

After gathering one half of the God Cube, the Rift Walker then travels to the Nil Zone to take the other half, which is held in the Children of Exo's possession. Battle ensues, and as the Rift Walker is about to defeat the Children of Exo, the Narrator's puppet hand is able to restrain him, allowing the Children of Exo to merge the God Cube back together.

The Rift Walker's body is used as a vessel to transplant the soul of Lord Exo into, but after Lord Exo is not able to fully gain control of it, he transfers his soul to Kronus's body, killing the Rift Walker in a spectacle of light.
