Ka-boooom! A great early game splash tower.
―Store Description

Description

The Golden Demoman is a splash damage tower that is an upgraded version of the Demoman, obtained from the Golden Crate for Coin50,000, if you own the Demoman. It can also appear in the Daily Skin Store for Coin55,000.

The Golden Demoman throws explosive golden grenades at enemies which deal medium damage within an explosion radius. To compensate, it has a rather fast firerate compared to other Splash Damage towers. It has no damage drop-off, so it deals full damage to all enemies within explosion radius. At Levels 0-2, the Golden Demoman takes one second to aim at an enemy before throwing its grenade. This only affects the damage for the first throw, as it means the Golden Demoman has to wait 0.8 seconds before throwing it. While it is aiming, it will lock onto one enemy until it throws the grenade, after which it can target a different one. Even after the targeted enemy dies, the Golden Demoman will continue targeting it, though its grenade will land slightly ahead of where the enemy dies, in order to hit the enemy should it be still alive and moving forward. The Golden Demoman will also continue to aim at a target enemy even if it leaves its range, allowing it to attack outside of its range.

The Golden Demoman is excellent for clearing huge crowds, except for those immune to splash damage. It is relatively weak against major bosses, though it can be useful for clearing the enemies that spawn from some major bosses. The Golden Demoman is considered an early game to mid-game tower, though in late game it can be quite useful for AOE damage when multiple are placed down.

The Golden Demoman can damage Lead and Hidden enemies, and has no placement limit.

Strategy

  • The Golden Demoman is considered an early to mid-game tower, allowing it to clear early waves quickly with its splash damage that is able to hit an unlimited number of enemies.
    • Golden Demoman can completely bypass Defense through its explosives, allowing it to quickly clear larger hordes of high-defense enemies like Heavy or Armored.
      • This also makes it very useful against enemies that received the Blessed attribute from Trickster Elf or Fallen Jester as it can completely bypass the extremely high defense of these types of enemies.
  • The Golden Demoman is excellent as starting defense in solo Hardcore mode, similarly to Golden Pyromancer. Its optimal usage is to place one down at the front of the map and upgrade it to Level 3 before getting something else.
    • Keep in mind that the earlier levels of Golden Demoman, like Level 0 and Level 1, can leak faster enemies like Swift, though this is not a huge issue since the earlier enemies have relatively low hp, and past Level 2 it can handle these enemy types much better.
    • Afterwards it is advantageous to invest in a few more Golden Demomans as they can clear larger hordes much better this way.
  • The Golden Demoman is best used when set to target Random, especially due to its faster firerate which allows for maximum area coverage.
    • Alternatively the Golden Demoman can be set to target first as summoner enemies like Necromancer and Frost Necromancer, or major bosses like Frost Spirit and Molten Warlord summon enemies in front of themselves, allowing Golden Demoman to quickly eliminate these weaker enemies and let the other towers focus on the target enemy.
  • The Golden Demoman is a good cost-effective option for early-mid game as it can easily clear earlier waves, though it struggles in late game by itself.
    • Pairing Golden Demoman with high single-target damage towers like Golden Minigunner and Crook Boss, or stall towers like Slime Trooper and Tesla allows for maximum efficiency as a crowd clearer.
    • Placing multiple Golden Demomans also allow it to take down stronger swarms much more easily, although this can cause some lag if particles are turned on.
  • The Golden Demoman can be paired with DJ Booth to increase its range and damage, or Commander to decrease its firerate, allowing it to handle late game more effectively
    • Pairing Golden Demoman with Golden Pyromancer can further increase its swarm clearing when paired with Golden Pyromancer's practically infinite burn.
    • Pairing Golden Demoman with Firework Technician will allow it to attack Flying enemies, though this is not recommended since Golden Demoman cannot generate fireworks at any level.
  • The Golden Demoman can accidentally hit Flying enemies if other detectable enemies are within range, but this is not recommended as it is rather unreliable and cannot directly target Flying enemies.
  • The Golden Demoman is stun immune at Level 4, so it cannot be stopped by most enemy attacks, making it a consistent and reliable splash damage tower.
    • In some cases, Golden Demoman can be used as enemy bait to protect other more vulnerable towers like Accelerator or Juggernaut by taking hits for them, and since it is stun immune, it is not affected, though do note certain enemies will not target towers with the Stun Immunity.
  • The Golden Demoman has no placement limit, so in solo matches it can be spammed to the point of dealing absurd amounts of collective DPS in the form of AOE damage.
    • This is not recommended due to the low single-target DPS and that the space a large number of them occupies is better used for other high damage towers like Golden Minigunner.

Trivia

  • The Golden Demoman is the first mainstream golden tower in 6 years to be added to the game since the Golden Soldier in 2020.
  • The Golden Demoman's Level 3 upgrade name, Loose Cannon, may be a reference to the Team Fortress 2 weapon of the same name.
  • The Golden Demoman's Level 4 upgrade name, A Thousand Exploding Suns, may be a reference to the line "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky…" from when Robert J. Oppenheimer witnessed the explosion from the Trinity test.

Notes

  1. ↑ Through splash damage, flying enemies may be hit indirectly if another detectable enemy is nearby, but this tower can never directly target flying enemies.
  2. ↑ Aim Time happens before the Demoman throws a grenade. This does not affect its firerate.
  3. ↑ DPS does not consider projectile travel time.
DPS assumes that only one enemy is hit and it receives full splash damage.
