"OH NOES, THE BEES! Attack enemies with bees that do damage over time. Won Spring 2020."
―Store Description

Not to be confused with the Swarm, an enemy.

Description

[edit]

The Swarmer is an event tower that could be obtained by beating Eggy Island as a part of Spring 2020 Event on Hard Mode. It could also be bought via a gamepass for Error creating thumbnail: File missing 350. Initially, it has a white beekeeper suit and has yellow skin. It also throws honey at zombies. After Level 1, it gains a beekeeper veil. After Level 3, it gains a Bee Gun to shoot bees at zombies. At Level 5, its suit becomes brown as opposed to white.

The Swarmer deals damage in an unusual way. It fires bees (or throws honey) at a zombie and the zombie will be damaged over time, even when the Swarmer is not directly attacking it. While its direct damage remains at one throughout, its bee damage increases as the levels progress. The zombie will be damaged every Tick, which is the interval between each sting for a given amount of time, known as the Sting Time.

The Swarmer also does not target a zombie if they are currently being stung by that same Swarmer. However, multiple Swarmers can attack one zombie, and the stinging effects stack. It should be noted that the Swarmer cannot detect Hiddens at any level, though it may damage it through its ability, the Beehive Grenade, which deals explosive damage to those caught within the explosion as well as applying the stinging effect.

Strategy

[edit]
  • The Swarmer is a very effective tower early game as it only needs to attack Normals, Speedys and Quicks once.
    • In addition to that, the Swarmer can hold out well against Slows and Heavys, allowing you to save up some money for more expensive towers, such as the Minigunner.
    • Multiple Level 5 Swarmers can also hold out very well against Fallens.
  • The Swarmer can hold out very well against multiple zombies as it can effectively damage more than one zombie concurrently.
    • However, it will fare less well against fast zombies that come in hordes, such as the Shock and Glitch.
  • A specific individual Swarmer cannot attack zombies if the zombie in question is being stung from bees that came from that specific Swarmer.
    • As a result, DPS can greatly exceed what is being stated as multiple zombies can be damaged at once.
    • However, other Swarmers can attack zombies if they are being stung, so long the bees are from another Swarmer tower. This will not reduce the stinging effect in any way as multiple stinging effects can stack.
    • Additionally, the Beehive Grenade stinging effect stacks on top of any existing stinging effect, even if the bees came from the Swarmer in which the Beehive Grenade came from.
  • The Swarmer cannot detect Hiddens at any level. For this reason, other towers with cheap hidden detection are recommended when Hiddens initially spawn.
    • Hiddens can be harmed and stung by the Beehive Grenade, though Hiddens will not be targeted by it.
  • The Beehive Grenade is very effective on hordes, especially Mystery hordes.
    • Be aware that it will always target the first zombie, no matter your targeting.
  • The Swarmer's bee damage cannot be boosted by John's Enraging Shout ability.

Trivia

[edit]
  • The Swarmer is based on R2DA's Swarmer in name and appearance.
  • The Swarmer's Level 3+ weapon, the Bee Gun, is heavily based on the Bee Gun from Terraria. The Beehive Grenade is also based on a Terraria item, the Beenade.
  • The store description is taken from a scene involving Nicholas Cage in the film The Wicker Man.
  • Immediately after its addition, it could have been bought for Error creating thumbnail: File missing 2,500. However, this was soon removed and anyone who acquired the Swarmer this way was refunded.
  • The Swarmer is commonly referred to as the Swarm, due to the full name being censored.
  • The damage statistic of the Swarmer will always remain at 1 whenever you open the upgrade box, no matter the level of the Swarmer.
    • This is because the Swarmer deals Bee Damage and the stated damage is never used.
